Tunnels, Towers and Temples Tunnels, Towers and Temples
Tunnels, Towers & Temples takes a sideways look at London, revealing the hidden stories, curious histories and sometimes comic assocations behind dozens of often quite familiar places. Through their stories, the author reveals a strange side of London most people never come to know, even though they walk its streets every day and take much of what they see entirely for granted. Typical examples include extensive networks of tunnels running beneath high street pavements, secret transport and signalling networks crisscrossing the capital, genuine oddities such as streetlamps powered by sewer gas, a street where you can legally drive on the right, a future Russian Tsar working incognito in a British naval dockyard, even a Nazi memorial sited among the real heroes and adventurers of the British Empire. This companion to Spectacular Vernacular: London's 100 Most Extraordinary Buildings is the best possible start for anyone who wishes to get off the beaten track and under the skin of the hidden city that is modern-day London.

Don't Ask for Stories Don't Ask for Stories
This collection of histories, in both written and illustrative form, from the women and men of Ernabella, in northern South Australia, tells the story of the interaction between white and black women that led to the establishment and development of a significant school of Australian art, Ernabella Arts Inc, which celebrated its 50th anniversary in 1998. From 'first missionary coming', through the terror of the nearby atomic bomb tests in the 1950s, to the commercial and artistic successes of the 1990s, the stories speak of great losses and regrets, but also of remarkable achievements, and of the skill and strength of the individuals whose voices we hear.At Ernabella Arts, all the artistic output is produced by women and this, one of the oldest centres of contemporary Aboriginal art in the country, is best known for its distinctive design and its use of new and innovative media, such as those used in textile art. The beautiful batiks produced at Ernabella have been exhibited around the world and the artists are sought after as teachers all over Australia, and internationally. These artists, when asked to explain their designs by those who are unaware of their non-representational nature, say 'don't ask for stories'. We are lucky, however, that they have chosen to record their stories in other ways, and in the process have given their readers a striking insight into their lives and work.

Cowgirls, Cockroaches and Celebrity Lingerie Cowgirls, Cockroaches and Celebrity Lingerie
This is an eye-popping tour of some of the most eccentric, bizarre and downright absurd collections of artefacts ever put on show. Strange things, human beings. They get passionate about strange things, too. All over the world and throughout the ages people have accumulated the extraordinary objects of their affection. Some of these collections are now museums...Michelle Lovric presents an armchair pilgrimage to some of the world's oddest and most interesting. They include museums of asparagus, lawnmowers, ships in bottles, the pets of American presidents, menstruation, worry beads and burnt food. There's the vast Spam museum in Minnesota, the tiny Carrot Museum in Belgium, Iceland's elegant and studious Phallological Museum, the hi-tech Parasite Museum in Japan, the chilling Museum of Madness in Venice, or London's atmospheric Old Operating Theatre. Each page describes in colourful detail a different eccentric or remarkable museum. Curators explain the reasons behind their collections. Other museums let their exhibits speak for themselves - conclusive proof that one man's rubbish is another man's relic. Troubled by how conformist, boring and homogenous the world sometimes seems? Cowgirls, Cockroaches and Celebrity Lingerie is the ideal tonic - a darkly hilarious celebration of the infinite variety of human weirdness.

New York Rises New York Rises
From 1906 to 1934, Eugene de Salignac shot over twenty thousand 8-by-10-inch glass-plate negatives of New York City. As sole photographer at the Department of Bridges/Plant and Structures during that period of dizzying growth, he documented the creation of the city's modern infrastructure - bridges, major municipal buildings, roads, and subways. For years these remarkably lyrical photographs have been used in books and films, but never credited to de Salignac. New York Rises is the first monograph to present them as an aesthetically coherent oeuvre by a photographer with a unique vision. As meticulous in his record keeping as he was creative in his photography, de Salignac left five handwritten logs that identify each negative by place and exact date. This information is complemented throughout the book by narrative captions expanding on themes such as accidents, bridges, workers, and the Depression. Michael Lorenzini has unearthed primary sources to reconstruct de Salignac's biography. Kevin Moore explores his work in the context of other photographers of the period, including EugAne Atget and Berenice Abbott.

The Voyage of the Discovery The Voyage of the Discovery
Written on his return to England, Scott's The Voyage of the Discovery provides a detailed and fascinating account of Antarctic exploration in the early twentieth century. Starting with a history of early discoveries in the region, he goes on to record the difficulties of organizing such an expedition and the challenges and dangers involved in the exploration of such a wild and untamed continent. Scott's account reflects the sense of wonder and amazement that he felt on discovering the strange and exotic fauna of the region, the problems caused by the unpredictable and often harsh weather, the comradeship of the men forced to co-exist in cramped quarters and the hardships and privations faced by a crew who had no help nearby in times of distress and only the provisions they could carry to see them through the trip. Beautifully illustrated with photographs of the expedition and pictures drawn by Dr. Wilson of the area, Voyage is a fascinating account of a land that was eventually to claim the author's life.

A Picture of Britain A Picture of Britain
I have always loved painting and scenery. The connection between the British landscape seen by all of us with the naked eye and the same landscape seen through the eyes of artists, musicians and writers is fascinating. In A Picture of Britain I will be exploring these links and looking at their impact on our national character, seeking out the countryside we admire and the reasons we cherish it.? David Dimbleby Accompanying a major new BBC One series presented by David Dimbleby and an important exhibition at Tate Britain, A Picture of Britain is a celebration of the British landscape and the art that it has inspired, from Constable to Lowry, from Turner to Nash. Written by David Dimbleby and leading experts on British art from Tate, it is beautifully illustrated with landscape photography and great works of art. From the slopes of Snowdonia to the industrial Black Country. from the grandeur of the Scottish Highlands to the meadows of Suffolk, the British landscape has inspired artists and writers for generations. But the authors show that it is only in the last two hundred years, stirred by art and poetry, that large numbers of people have sought out and visited wilder and more rugged vistas. In paintings, photographs and words, this remarkable book captures our rich cultural heritage, creating for the reader A Picture of Britain.

The Shanghai Museum The Shanghai Museum
The Shanghai Museum is the finest museum of modern China - in terms of wealth of collection, display and architecture. Originally built in 1952 on the site of the old race course, it re-opened in 1993 in a startling new building in Renmin Square in the heart of central Shanghai. Designed in the shape of an ancient bronze ding, opposite the new City Hall and the new Opera House, it provides an iconic symbol of the staggering new wealth, power and taste of the city of Shanghai. The building was financed largely by the Shanghai City government. The collections have been hugely enhanced by a large number of gifts from outside China, many from prominent overseas Chinese collectors. Each of the nine galleries is of world class in its own right. The displays are among the most modern in the world, and the most sophisticated. Alone amongst China's major museums, a large proportion of its collection of 120,000 objects is displayed. The lighting, presentation and labelling (in English as well as Chinese) is crisp, accurate and informative. There are nine major collections, all important and representative, with items of the highest quality: The Ancient Bronze Collection is unique and the most unexpected of them all. The others are: Sculpture, Ceramics, Painting, Calligraphy, Seals, Jades, Ming and Qing Furniture, Coins, and the Arts and Crafts of the Minority Nationalities. The multitude of visitors includes not only foreigners, but also a cross-section of Chinese society. The Shanghai Museum not only gives the visitor an unparalleled view of Chinese art, but also an insight into modern China's perception of its visual culture.

Actors and directors like Sir Ian Mckellen and Sir Peter Hall have earned Cambridge a reputation for theatrical excellence, while the colleges have been home to an extraordinary list of poets, including Milton and Wordsworth, Byron and Tennyson, Sylvia Plath and Ted Hughes. During the 20th century the city surrounding the university grew rapidly as a once small fenland town became a magnet for high-tech industries. The University City: courts and gardens, dons and students; Cambridge poets and spies; the struggle for women's colleges and degrees The City of Science and Discovery: Newton, Darwin, the Cambridge physicists, the double helix, Stephen hawking and the secrets of the universe The City of Drama and Comedy: from latin entertainments for Elizabeth I to the Footlights and Monty Python

Scott's Last Biscuit Scott's Last Biscuit
Arctic and Antarctic travel writing has seized the popular imagination for the last three hundred years. Emphasizing themes of endurance, danger and self-sacrifice, tales from the poles are testimony both to human curiosity and to the often fatal attraction of alien landscapes. Figures such as Ernest Shackleton, Captain Oates and Roald Amundsen have become iconic figures in the history of exploration. Yet polar exploration has also spawned a literature with its own history and development. This book discusses the most influential and popular accounts of polar journeys, from the fourteenth-century tax collector who arrived at the Viking settlement in Greenland to find that the inhabitants had mysteriously disappeared, to Captain Robert Falcon Scott's meticulous account of his own dying. Sarah Moss offers literary readings of books by Nansen, Scott, Franklin and Parry as well as bringing to light less famous but equally important works by other explorers, missionaries and archaeologists from Europe and North America. Thematically arranged, Scott's Last Biscuit considers the morbid fascination of expeditions that go horribly wrong and the even greater interest attached to those that are rescued at the last minute. Looking at risks ranging from frostbite and polar bears to starvation and cannibalism, it also analyses the enduring appeal of romanticized polar landscapes, the relationship between national identity and planting flags in the ice, and literary approaches to polar travel from Winnie the Pooh to Frankenstein. Considering the little-charted role of women in polar history, Sarah Moss discusses Jenny Darlington's unjustly neglected American 1950s autobiography, My Antarctic Honeymoon (for protection against the polar winds I applied lipstick), Letitia Hargraves' moving and likeable journal of life as the wife of a Hudson's Bay Company factor in the early nineteenth century, and Isobel Hutchison's solitary travels around Greenland in the 1930s as a botanist for ...

Vanilla Beans and Brodo Vanilla Beans and Brodo
Foreign writers living in Italy frequently treat the local people as an exotic species to provide amusing stories for their readers. Sipping cappuccino and supping pasta, rarely do they perceive what is going on around them, nor understand the complexity of life for today's Italians. Isabella Dusi came from Australia to settle in Montalcino, a Tuscan mountain eyrie famous for its wine. Her acceptance into this close-knit community was a hard-won thing. This text is her account of life there, offering a rare insight into the anxiety, joy, fun and pressure of inhabiting this medieval village. It also tells of the village's bloody history which has left its mark on the character traits of the Montalcinese. In this evocative story of the rivalry between village neighbourhoods, of football fever and festival pageantry, Isabella Dusi destroys the myth that Tuscan villages are tranquil places and instead reveals a life infinitely rich and full of dramas. This moving and often humorous journey changes the cliched image of Tuscany and brings real understanding of the fierce passion of today's Tuscans for their ancient village, their fertile land and their life in Montalcino.

Unforgettable Places to See Before You Die Unforgettable Places to See Before You Die
We only get one life so we owe it to ourselves to see as much of this beautiful world as possible. For many of us, lying on a beach for two weeks each year is just not enough any more. We want to see ancient monuments, extraordinary scenery, endangered wildlife, foreign cultures, architecture and art - places that give us the chance to grow and expand our horizons. Unforgettable Places to See Before You Die will help you search out some of these essential destinations and experiences. International travel writer and photographer Steve Davey has drawn on his years of experience in selecting forty of his favourite places. Some, such as the Taj Mahal and the Alhambra, are relatively well-known, but most, such as the incredible temple of Angkor Wat in Cambodia and the amazing sand dunes of Dead Vlei in the Namib desert, are very much off the beaten track. Some, such as Venice or New York, involve relatively comfortable journeys, whilst others present more of a challenge - crossing the wilderness to see the rock-hewn churches at Lalibela in Ethiopia, for example, or trekking for nine days at altitude to see the stunning Himalayan scenery around Makalu in Nepal. Although there are plenty of tips for travellers, this is not a travel guide, and is certainly not definitive, but it will introduce you to a host of spectacular locations, all of which can be visited in a holiday of two weeks or less. Beautifully illustrated throughout with specially commissioned photographs, this is a book that will inspire you to think beyond the walls of your room and take time out to visit some of the world's truly unforgettable places.

Celtic Sacred Landscapes Celtic Sacred Landscapes
The Celtic tradition is one of the most ancient in Europe, with roots going back nearly 3000 years. Today there is much to be learned from the Celtic world view, with its emphasis on the recognition of the unseen world and the vital part it plays in our relationship with the physical landscape. This work shows the holy sites of Britain, Ireland and mainland Europe through Celtic eyes, reinvesting each place in the landscape with its ancient spiritual, symbolic and mythological importance - giving insight into how we can renew our lapsed relationship with the sacred landscape today. The book provides a historical tour of the Celtic holy places of Europe, focusing particularly on Wales, Scotland, Ireland, Cornwall, the Isle of Man and Brittany. From the original Celtic site of the castle at Tintagel to the sacred forest of Broceliande in Brittany, it shows the mystery and lore of sacred trees and stones and reveals the power of springs and wells as places of healing. Sacred caves and holy islands, sanctified earthworks and cities and the holy places of the Celtic saints are visited. The book should also be of interest to visitors and travellers with a gazetteer that includes Ordnance Survey references.
